This is a common question and one that I found myself asking when I first started doing this as well. I'll address the inexpensive ones first. While a number of factors can be involved, a cheaper DJ generally does not have a lot of experience and does not feel that they are worth more than what they charge. Another major reason would be the lack of any operating costs, meaning that they may use pirated music, have cheap or old equipment without proper back-ups in place, fail to carry liability insurance, or are operating "under the table" and not paying taxes on their income. At the other end of the spectrum lies the high end DJ's. These companies generally have many years of experience, and top of the line equipment. Their increased prices are needed to cover costs of equipment, advertising and website fees, office rental, employee expenses, and membership dues to any number of DJ referral companies.
With all that said, we are happy to be somewhere in between. We started at the bottom like alot of others, but have had success and have been able to purchase better equipment and gain alot of experience in the process. We save our customers money by keeping our expenses down, using simple advertising and web hosting, and relying a lot on referrals. While some of our higher end packages can be relatively expensive, our base prices leave us available for a lot of people who want quality entertainment but don't want to spend thousands of dollars to get it.
While the basic principle of playing music is the same, weddings do require more time and effort than other events. First and foremost is that we recognize that this is a very special day, and one that hopefully only comes once in a person's life, and we like to make sure we do as much as possible to make the event one to remember. Weddings typically require at least one planning meeting with the couple to determine what their needs are. We also generally have 2 people working the wedding so that one of us can emcee while the other controls lights and music. Additional setup time is needed on the day of to ensure a tidy and elegant setup of our equipment, so a 4 hour reception is easily an 8 hour day for us. This is obviously in contrast to a summer pool party where we can unload, setup, and be playing music in about 30 minutes.
We do not generally sub-contract our events. While some companies will book every job that comes their way and then find a DJ to cover it, we will personally work at our events. If we are unavailable we will let you know at the time of booking and refer you to another DJ. In the event of an emergency where we are unable to handle an event that we have been contracted to do, we may have to contact another company to cover, and will make every attempt to inform you as soon as possible. We network with several other respected companies to ensure that your event will be covered.
Absolutely! One of the things that sets us apart is our willingness to work with our clients. Some DJ's come with a large ego and it is tough to get them to change the way they run an event. We feel that it is your night and ultimately you are in charge. While we will help you out and offer advice, the final decisions rest with you. We will be friendly and personable with you, your guests, and other event staff.
